Doug Perkins and Jamie Masefield Duo.
Brandon On Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., Brandon Music will showcase the Doug Perkins and Jamie Masefield Duo. The shows will feature a variety of jazz and bluegrass tunes on mandolin and acoustic guitar, highlighting interactive, communicative play.
The beautiful, tonal qualities of acoustic stringed instruments give a fresh take on some of the jazz tunes, proving that mandolin and guitar are not just bluegrass and country instruments, although they'll play some of that music, too.
Playing off and on together for over 25 years, the duo has developed intuitive and virtuosic playing that sets them apart from Nashville and West Coast styles. Doug Collette of State of Music says, “The notes each played meshed with accuracy and intricacy, whether the selection was a traditional bluegrass tune or a composition from Django Reinhardt. And the knowledge of the music itself was as important as the familiarity with each other as musicians, for it rendered their interaction seemingly effortless.”
From their first gig playing together at UVM in 1987, they both took different paths. Jamie lead the international and nationally touring act called the Jazz Mandolin Project, which landed a Blue Note Recording record along with many accolades. With the Jazz Mandolin Project, Jamie offered an entirely new concept of what the mandolin could do, pushing the boundaries with a new innovative sound that changed the mind of many as to the instrument’s potential.
Doug is best known for his experience touring nationally with the band, Smokin' Grass, which made a name for itself at bluegrass festivals throughout the country in the late 1990s. However, right here in the Green Mountains, he has developed a distinctive, versatile style on acoustic guitar, enabling him to appear with many of the area’s musical juggernauts regardless of their preferred genre. In 2012, Doug recorded and released the Music for Flatop Guitar which featured Jamie and Tyler Bolles.
